MARATHON BARBIE I have a friend that goes by the name of Marathon Barbie – she’s blonde, she’s beautiful and she runs marathons. It’s totally fitting and fits her to a tee, and could definitely outrun most of us on any given day.
Boy oh boy can this girl run!
Marathon Barbie runs marathons – and I’ll bet my last dollar that she has run faster than I ever could, and probably faster than most of us…
Kirby and I met a long, long time ago in our swimsuit modelling competition days. She was always the brain in my operation and my costume guru. Kirby was the best at deciding outfits, routines and song choices – even deciding on my final choice of “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” when I won the National Title Theme wear at Australian Swimwear Model Of The Year competition. I loved this girl so much, we even became housemates. She was / still is the queen of being organised and was the best a friend a girl could ever wish for.
See? Modelling competition days…
Then, Kirby went to Canada and ate too many Churros and needed to lose weight… As a traveler, there wasn’t too much cash left over for the gym, so she started to run. Initially, the goal was to just run around the lake (about 10km’s). Within 9 months, her first goal was accomplished and it was on to the next – the half marathon. It only took Kirby a further 12 months to complete a half and a full marathon being her own motivation to get fit and healthy, but to also prove to herself that she could do it. She was one determined little cookie!
After ticking both the half and full marathon box, she decided the ultra-marathon was the next best thing. She did that (with somewhat ease.. ) in the Blue Mountains in western Sydney – The North Face 100km 2014. Honestly. She never stops impressing me!
Such a babe!
And she’s also run the infamous Boston Marathon.
So far just this year, Kirby has run more than 10 Marathons with all sub 4 hour times, plus a 100km ultra marathon in The Blue Mountains. This girl never stops. Some of her personal bests include:
5km – 19:24, Parkrun, 22nd March 2014
Half Marathon – 1:36:46, Central Coast Half Marathon, November 2013
Marathon – 3:21:20, Boston Marathon, 21st April 2014
So how did Kirby become Marathon Barbie?
Although shes blonde, beautiful and owns probably too much pink, Kirby and Barbie barely have much in common.
When Kirby decided to start a running blog, she needed a name. After a slight struggle to find a suitable title, she noticed her little marathon-clothed Barbie doll (that a friend had gifted her), perched next to her winning medals and race numbers. Inspired by her mini-me in its race gear, Marathon Barbie was born.
This woman inspires me every day. She is so positive, helpful and makes my life a pure joy when she is around. The best of a friend I could ever ask for. You can follow her journey on www.MarathonBarbie.com – You won’t regret it!
