Skin Peels : What’s All The Fuss About?

One of the most important parts of being a model is having beautiful and flawless skin. For years, I have battled with pimples, pores, lumps and bumps for too long and am always looking for some answers. This picture with Bronte pretty much sums it up for me: clear skin but bumps just under the surface!

Although the occasional facial at your local salon and the expensive skin-care regime from the department store may seem like the way to go, more often than not, bulk and targeted advertising will often cloud your opinion and make you believe that there is no need for the educated professional. Apparently, you can have the solution right here in your own cupboard – take home version!

Actually, the best skin solutions are not for sale in a take-home version. Unless you spend seven or more years educating yourself on the details of all levels and treatments of skin at University and Dermal institutions. I am lucky to have some amazing friends and opportunities presented to me and be able to find out these little beauty secrets.. and today, I am more than happy to share them with you! Although I am only mid-way to my skin goals, my journey is something I am very excited about and love to share. I am passionate about natural beauty and being comfortable in my own skin – make-up free – and definitely want to share this with you all!

Cue Victorian Dermal Group.

I asked my Skin-Angel Derya Koch – Dermal Clinician of Victorian Dermal Group – a few questions about Skin Peels.

Becky: Derya, tell me a little about Skin Peels? What can they do for me?

Derya: Skin Peels are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today and can significantly improve the appearance of the skin. Chemical peels are a method of regenerating and resurfacing the skin by inducing a controlled wound, these light to medium depth peels remove part of the epidermal layer and therefore improve acne and acne scarring, sun-damaged skin, skin pigmentation problems, wrinkles, skin texture, and the overall appearance of the skin. Peels give the best results when performed in a series, however even a single treatment can make a signific  ant difference. Victorian Dermal Group uses Aspect Dr clinical skin peels, with varying strengths and formulations to treat a wide variety of skin concerns.

B: How does a clinical/medical peel work?

D: Clinical/medical peels promote exfoliation, skin exfoliation is achieved by either chemical or physical means, chemical exfoliation (clinical/medical peels) is achieved by using naturally derived acids. The formulations are made up of naturally derived acids, for example two commonly used Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHA’s) or Beta Hydroxy acids (BHA’s). A simple comparison between AHA’s and BHA’s is simply that BHA’s are primarily oil soluble – works on the oil phases of the skin that cause acne and congestion, also ideal for thickened skins due to external environmental factors. Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHA’s) are hydrophilic (water soluble) used in product formulations to facilitate an increase in cell turn over, and for their antioxidant and hydrating properties.

B: What will the treatment feel like?

D: The treatment is very comfortable, expect some dryness and possible flaking 5 days post peel as your skin goes through an exfoliation process. To minimise your recovery period we perform clinical / medical peels with a hydrating and repairing ampoule and mask.

B: How many treatments are required?

D: This will depend on the condition being treated. Normally a course of 4 peels and cosmeceutical home care achieve great results.

B: How do I prepare my skin?

D: Within 2 weeks prior to your treatment DO NOT have any of the following treatments:

  • Waxing of any area to be treated
  • Depilatory use in any treated area
  • Laser treatments
  • Chemical treatments of any kind

 Also note:

  • During summer Sunscreen must be worn
  • Any active injury or inflammation to the treatment area
