SPR BALOUSKA : A Different Kind of Horsepower

Incase you haven’t worked it out yet, I have an absolute obsession for animals – mainly dogs and horses.

I have never in my life owned a horse but grew up begging my mum to take me to my aunts house every holidays, where she had horses everywhere. All I wanted to do was ride! We weren’t able to afford a horse ourselves, but I made do with what I could. I even had mu dog at the time preform tricks and jumps in the back yard.. I was obsessed!

Upon moving to the Gold Coast just over a year ago, I needed a new love and hobby, and decided to take up proper dressage riding with Linda Truer. She offered a service to be able to ride a quality warmblood, and have informed and safe lessons at the same time, at a great cost too. And in no time, I was hooked.

After about 6 months with Linda, one of her favourite horses became available for purchase – SPR Balouska, or BALOU as she’s affectionately known. She wasn’t too young, but experienced and always ready to give 110%.

I made a call to Linda from New Zealand where we were at the time, and a week late, she was mine. And what a decision that was – very quick but I went with my gut and have loved every minute!

She’s such a babe. Its absolute LOVE at first sight.

Unfortunately for me, only two months after having her, I lost my balance and fell from her. I ended up being taken by ambulance to hospital with a brain bleed, concussion, 12 hours of memory loss, a crack in my skill and a very sore shoulder. Not ideal by any means, but was certainly something I have learnt from. Yes, I was wearing a helmet, and yes, I was in an arena. These things happen, I will just learn to grip and find my balance better next time..

But on my first ride back, my buddy ol’ pal Emily Stone took some of these fab shots of Balou and I. I really appreciated the time she took and how gentle she was too – Balou was great, but was wondering what was going on, that was for sure!

Im looking forward to forming a healthy and strong bond with my horse, as there are already some moments together we’ve had that are extraordinary. We are learning so much from each other! We hope 2017 will be all about learning and adventure together, and 2018 we can hit some jumps and eventing days together and really have a crack. I absolutely cannot wait!
